Why Do We Need The Texas Board of Legal Specialization?
Prior to the creation of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, lawyers with little or no experience in a given field of law were able to tell potential clients that they were “specialists” in the field. To eliminate confusion in the legal services marketplace and to help Texans find competent legal representation, the Texas Supreme Court created the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. It established a process by which lawyers could qualify for certification in a specific legal field.
What Must A Lawyer Do To Become Board Certified?
To become board certified in a specific area of law such as personal injury trial law or civil trial law, a lawyer must have been licensed to practice for at least five years, devoted a required percentage of practice to the desired specialty for at least three years, completed 60 hours of continuing legal education (CLEs), passed an evaluation by his or her peers, and passed a six-hour written examination. All of these requirements must be met before an attorney can advertise as being a board certified attorney in a given legal field.
